If it worries you that all churches seem uninspiring, understand that in the world today you are part very large group of dreadfully uninspired people. I find it disappointing that it so easy to ridicule what should be the very answer to all the ills of the world. But each year the churches of the world grow to become a place where the poor and lonely are ignored, and the needy are scorned as unworthy. Brethren in my opinion it is neither what we have done, nor what we have not done that is causing this dilemma of virtue to be so critically overwhelming. It is our inability to allow our faith to center on those "things" that can happen if we will just allow them to happen instead of working so hard to keep them from happening.
DC 76:2d for by my Spirit will I enlighten them, and by my power will I make known unto them the secrets of my will; yea, even those things which eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor yet entered into the heart of man.
In reading the scriptures I marvel at God's ability to create situations that prove to the world His love for His children and humanity's ability to forget He even exist. He uses His priesthood to heal people of all kinds of infirmaries, but to many times it looks like a trick. He fed 5,000 families with two fish and five loaves of bread, but too often the world writes this off as just another legend from the Bible. Perhaps we should look at these situations from a different point of view. Brethren, these are both clean-cut cases of attention seeking behavior offered to us by the omnipotent creator of the universe. All He wants to do is talk with us and all He wants of us is to listen. In this we are given growth that will allow us a fuller ability to hear and believe the voice of God. It will allow us in prayer to open our hearts fully to God and receive more of what He wants to give us. In this one little concession to God, prayer becomes more than just recitation in dedication, it truly gives us the ability to communicate with our Father in Heaven.
2 Nephi 12:36-38
12:36 For behold, thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little:
12:37 And blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my counsel, for they shall learn wisdom;
12:38 For unto him that receiveth, I will give more: and from them that shall say, We have enough, shall be taken away even that which they have.
Our ability to humble ourselves completely to God allows us to hear His voice. This is wisdom that God promised to restore to us that we might be able to hear and understand all that He says.
The Inspired Version of the Bible given to Joseph Smith Jr. contains other plain and precious truths restored that the people might understand more fully our relationship with God.
Genesis 6:66 And, behold, all things have their likeness; and all things are created and made to bear record of me; both things which are temporal, and things which are spiritual; things which are in the heavens above, and things which are on the earth, and things which are in the earth, and things which are under the earth, both above and beneath, all things bear record of me.
The bibles used by the churches of the world do not contain this very important bit of knowledge. Understand the virtue within the promise made here by God. All things in creation speak of and refer to the redemption of man to the face of God. Think of the rising sun. Does it just pop up into our view or does it grow in our perception from a gentle light that chases away the darkness to become an overwhelming light that destroys all shadow. Such is the way the voice of God grows in our life. When that harvest of the fall becomes the killing time of winter is all hope lost or does the promise of spring dwell in our hearts as a promise that we might be reborn again. Such is the way of repentance.
Understand the fullness of God that dwells everyday all around us. We can hear His voice with our eyes. We can find His truth within our failures as well as our successes. Each time God touches our life He speaks to our heart that we might learn and grow. The most precious truth we can add to our lives is that if we allow it, God will live within us through His Holy Spirit.
3 Nephi 5:4-5
5:4 And it came to pass that while they were thus conversing one with another, they heard a voice, as if it came out of heaven; and they cast their eyes round about, for they understood not the voice which they heard;
5:5 And it was not a harsh voice, neither was it a loud voice, nevertheless, and notwithstanding it being a small voice, it did pierce them that did hear, to the center, insomuch that there was no part of their frame that it did not cause to quake; yea, it did pierce them to the very soul, and did cause their hearts to burn.
DC 98:4f Therefore, let your hearts be comforted concerning Zion, for all flesh is in mine hands: be still, and know that I am God.
This is the voice of God. Listen for it and it will speak. Is this some metaphysical mumbo jumbo? No, it is truth and it can only become our truth if we allow it to be. Think of the times we were faced with a situation that could be good or bad depending on a decision that we just couldn't make. This small voice within destroys the quandary of indecision and gives us direction. Mankind calls it a conscience and that may very well be all it is, but only as we grow to trust God, humble ourselves to the fact that God's ways can work in our lives will we ever allow ourselves to see truth as truth and all else as something less that truth. This Brethren, truly is the voice of God working in our lives.
Psalms 46:10-11
46:10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
46:11 The Lord of hosts shall be with us, the God of Jacob our refuge. Selah.
"Good luck is no more than a blessing that God doesn't get credit for." I can give no credit for who originally coined this phrase, but it is both humbling and life altering. It speaks to me of the power of God in our life and our willingness to hear and accept the voice of God trying to lead us back to Him. I appreciate these words because of the Scriptures, but they came to me from a place beyond the Scriptures. Such is the reality of God. He comes to us both through the Scriptures and from beyond the Scriptures. Such is the reality of the fullness of His voice. The Scriptures taught us to listen and understand. His voice lives with us each day that our lives might become more abundant in the Word of God. One cannot exist without the other, nor can one replace the other. We need both, and God will allow us both if we but ask. But, we must ask.
Matthew 7:12-13
7:12 Say unto them, Ask of God; ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
7:13 For every one that asketh, receiveth; and he that seeketh, findeth; and unto him that knocketh, it shall be opened.
Proverbs 15:8-9
15:8 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord; but the prayer of the upright is his delight.
15:9 The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the Lord; but he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.
Understand brethren, it is our choice to recognize that our lives are filled with God's voice. It speaks to us in the warmth of the spring breezes that brings life to the world at the end of a killing winter. It renews us each time we allow it to fill our hearts with the joy of redemption. It fills us to overflowing and becomes a surplus we must share. This is the way of God and the very foundation of the Kingdom we seek, but we must understand that used improperly, our words can turn the treasure we posses into an unfair burden on the heart those that seek the heart of the Father and do not yet know Him.
James 3:5-6
3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth
3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity; so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
Understand the balance that must exist in our hearts and our lives if we as a people are to bring God's Word and His voice to the people of the world. Many times the difference between righteousness and wickedness can be defined by intent. The righteousness of God is growth through love. If we offer the Gospel on a foundation of fear and judgment we can incite wickedness in the heart of mankind. History is replete with man's misdirected effort to further the Kingdom of God. From the Spanish Inquisition of the 1400s to the reputed attacks on settlers in Nevada by the armies of Brigham Young, mankind has the ability to make God's word and the spreading of God's word into an act of wickedness.
John 3:16-17
3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish; but have everlasting life.
3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Stated in this passage from the Gospel of John is not only the God given intent of Christ's ministry, but also requested methodology. As it was Christ's, so it is ours. God reveals truth through love and directs us away from condemnation. If we reach out intending to condemn others for their unrighteousness, we have chosen not to follow God's wishes. God sees this as wickedness.
Section 3:3a-3b
3:3a Verily, verily I say unto you, that Satan has great hold upon their hearts; he stirreth them up to iniquity against that which is good, and their hearts are corrupt, and full of wickedness and abominations, and they love darkness rather than light, because their deeds are evil; therefore they will not ask of me.
3:3b Satan stirreth them up, that he may lead their souls to destruction.
Christ brought a much different ministry to God's children. The growth of truth through love was the maxim He followed. Do not imagine that this attitude is the responsibility of clergy or priesthood only. All that seek God must live and love within God's design, which is growth through love.
2 Corinthians 6:10 As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.
This is Christ's labor. It is a ministry of righteousness. We can only be worthy or capable of this labor if we allow ourselves the ability to commune with God in prayer and open our hearts to the ways of God through His Spirit. It really is just that simple. It really is just that hard.
But........If we do it
In the name of Christ
Just think what..........can..................happen.
