I Want More

Whether we will ever admit it or not, humanity as a whole, seems to be drawn to ideals and practices that corrupt the moral fabric of any successful society. The popular excuse that sets the stage for this belief is that morality and virtue become monotonous and tend to discourage humanity's ability to grow and be creative. We accept this because everyone knows that growth causes change and change is dangerous. If we allow this belief to interfere with our growth in ways of moral stability, we can become dissatisfied with what we have created, because it falls short of all we sought to achieve. Disappointed and frustrated we begin seeking for something that will either numb us to our lack of joy, or cause us to be if not happy at lest contented. The media has convinced us that alcohol and/or drugs are the choice of everyone facing a frustrating failure, but these are just two of the many temporal "things" we can use to stave off the anxiety of perpetual boredom. It can be money. It can be status. It can even be a devotion to earthly ideals such as bigotry. We seek to worship something that will relieve us from this god-awful mundane state of uselessness, fear, and failure before God.

Haggai 1:5-7
1:5 Now therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways.
1:6 Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages, earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.
1:7 Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways.

The inherent danger of the lusting for what the world offers goes far beyond its ability to pervert our labor with God. It is a trap that can corrupt our very soul, because to flirt with sin is to feel all of its delightful qualities. It is true that a beer after a particularly stressful day does allow you to escape the anxiety you feel, and but consider what is required to create that feeling.

C. FERNANDO VALENZUELA, M.D., PH.D. Evidence suggests that alcohol affects brain function by interacting with multiple neurotransmitter systems, thereby disrupting the delicate balance between inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters. Short-term alcohol exposure tilts this balance in favor of inhibitory influences.

In layman's terms alcohol acts as a sedative that inhibits the ability of one brain cell to talk to another. It does this by damaging the synapse or connective tissue between brain cells. Now tie this together with the fact that God created for us a body that heals itself. Damaged, it repairs itself and at the same time increases its resistance to the damage it suffered. Healed tissue is stronger that it was before the injury. Because of this when you drink a beer you will soon find that the delightful relaxation you got from one beer will soon require two. In effect one becomes two, and two becomes three.

Remember, our efforts have in effect taught our body that drinking beer is quickest way to relax. Soon the brain without alcohol will be unable to achieve anything resembling the state of euphoria we seek and have come to expect. We suffer. This in simple terms is a physical addiction. Oddly enough, if the brain wants it enough, the body, even before it is addicted, will support the brain and produce all of the physical symptoms we need to convince us to yield to the want as if it were a need. This is in simple terms is a psychological or emotional addiction. Some will try to convince you that emotional addiction is just a weakness that with proper discipline we can overcome. Both present us with a challenge not unlike that which Eve lost to in the Garden.

Proverbs 23:32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

Understand this: Every lust that the world offers us has this same potential to trap us in a cage, and leave us with no key to unlock the door. How much money is enough? Are they really better than me because they're rich? What is skinny enough? When will our team win enough championships? How big a closet do I need to assure me I have the right outfit for every occasion? When will the toolbox in my garage have every tool I need? Mankind seems to have this never ending need for bigger, better, more, more, more, and by our very nature this thirst for more can be never ending.

1 Timothy 6:6-8
6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.6:7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
6:8 And having food and raiment, let us be therewith content.

Is this true for humanity as a whole? Can we know peace and contentment with three meals a day and a decent set of clothes to wear? Is that enough? In my opinion no and truthfully I think that is God's opinion, too.

Psalms 90:10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

We seek to gain many things in this life, but only God can give us time. He knows that His created children will want more than just the seventy or eighty years of life alluded to in the psalm, and if we are faithful to His Gospel we will expect more life as our reward. Pay strict attention to how much more God offers us.

John 3: 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish; but have everlasting life

How much more life does God offer us as a reward for joining Him and laboring for His purpose; a day, a year, a thousand years? No, He offers us all of it. Total, complete, no more can be offered. He will cause us to live forever. That's just one example.

John 4:16 But whosoever drinketh of the water which I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life; he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Again, more than we could ever need. People God, knows His children and He knows that when it comes to the desires of the heart, they can be insatiable. God designed us to want more and to never be satisfied until we had it all. Is that a bad thing? Think carefully and remember what we have learned about God and His Kingdom. Anything in the Kingdom of God can be used for good or bad. It is we who must make that decision, but bear in mind the creatures we are. For a game we will spend hours building a wall out of wood blocks only to push it over just to see it fall. We will work hard for stability, but we love the chaos of competition. Are we broke? No, We are human and God sees in us the ability to be either the hand of destruction that corrupt all that He created or caretakers of His Kingdom He sought long ago in the Garden of Eden.

Genesis 2: 18 And I, the Lord God, took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden, to dress it, and to keep it.

God knows who we are and believe it or not He has a level of faith in us that is astounding. He is our biggest fan and tells us always of all the good things we can accomplish. He even promises us that when we labor to bring about His Kingdom, He will help.

2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work;

Don't get me wrong. Righteous works don't just happen. Charitable deeds are the result of a compassionate heart and willingness to labor and minister with Christ as our pattern. As an example, reread our sample verse from 2 Corinthians in context. Grasp all that is required of us in our labors with God.

2 Corinthians 9:6-8
6:6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
6:7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity; for God loveth a cheerful giver.
6:8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work;Understand that God will never make us work, but once we are working He will add His abilities to all we are doing. God will lead us in the path of redemption for all, but if we are not up moving, He can't tell us when to turn and what direction to go. Many live their life in God thinking that if I do nothing at least I am not doing anything wrong. The truth is that by doing nothing we are already doing something wrong. Christ put it this way:

Revelations 3:15-16
3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot; I would thou wert cold or hot.
3:16 So then because thou are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth.

I think that we are now at a point where we can bring clarity to this discussion. Humanity has an undeniable talent for corrupting the perfection God creates. If you consider Abraham and Hagar, Moses and the rock at Horeb, and David and Bathsheba, you will find that even the Patriarchs of the Bible testified of humanities ability. It is the very reason the creature that was the epitome of God's creation needed saving and the reason Christ came to be our savior. But take heart Brethren for the presence of Jesus Christ, the life of ministry He lived, His sacrificial death, and His resurrection are testimony and proof of the faith God has in us.

John 15:14-16
15:14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
15:15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth; but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit; and that your fruit should remain; that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

If this still leaves you wondering why God has so much faith in us, consider our true nature when faced with something we want...........We want it all.

Proverbs 13:12 Hope deferred maketh the heart sick; but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

God wants us to join Him in His labor for the purpose of the Kingdom. He seeks for us to covenant with Him through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ that we might commit ourselves to the labor. He needs for us to receive His Holy Spirit and revere Its teachings that we might labor with Him in purity. Because when the desires of His heart become our desires also; we will strive mightily for the fullness of all that we can achieve in God and we will not stop until we become that city of one heart, one mind, with no poor among them, for it is in His children's nature to want it all.

Psalms 37:4-5
37:4 Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
37:5 Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

Now together we all know why God puts up with these hairy little monkeys we like to call humanity. He knows that like a three ton boulder, all He has to do is get us moving in the right direction, direct us to the nearest downhill slope, and in just one little push His Kingdom will be here and He will be united face to face with His people once again.

John 14:20-21
14:20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Genesis 9:22-23
9:22 And this is mine everlasting covenant, that when thy posterity shall embrace the truth, and look upward, then shall Zion look downward, and all the heavens shall shake with gladness, and the earth shall tremble with joy;
9:23 And the general assembly of the church of the firstborn shall come down out of heaven, and possess the earth, and shall have place until the end come. And this is mine everlasting covenant, which I made with thy father Enoch.
Brethren, it is in us to build God's city. He has the way and He offers all the help we could ever need. The only thing I can figure is that we are stopping ourselves.

Why are we doing that?

Ponder this.
